Service Rifle
The SERVICE RIFLE SECTION (SR) is dedicated to shooting historically-correct military-style service rifles as well as more modern firearms. Typically, you will see vintage rifles of the World War One and Two eras alongside modern firearms, shot at ranges varying from 100 meters to 500 meters.
Section members provide all their own firearms, personal equipment and ammunition during the weekly shooting sessions as the section does not have any equipment available to lend to new members. Depending on the range/event, members may share scoring duties during the practice session to facilitate longer-range scoring and maximize the range time. During the summer months, the SR Section shoots on Thursday evenings from 5:00 PM to last light and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to approximately noon. A reduced schedule is followed in the winter months, weather permitting.
Members congregate at Range Control, 20 minutes prior to the commencement of the shooting session and move from there to the range. Non-members interested in the SR Section are encouraged to come out on a Saturday morning at 8:45 to talk to a Range Officer about the section's activities. Thursday evenings are restricted to current members.
Connaught Ranges closes to general shooting from mid-July to late-August for competitions run by various national bodies and the section's normal activities are usually curtained during this period, as well as on major statutory holidays.
